The new Central section of the Topo underground system in Donostia will be operative at the end of 2025

This final stage of the project involves an investment of 13.8 million and is being performed by the UTE [Temporary Consortium] composed of Elecnor, Omexom Spain, Eldu and Montajes Eléctricos San Ignacio.

Elecnor, as part of the UTE along with Eldu, Montajes Eléctricos San Ignacio and Omexom Spain, has begun the final stage of the works on the new Central section of the Topo underground system in Donostia, which will begin to be operational at the end of 2025.

The project, which was recently awarded with a value of over EUR 13.8 million, will involve the execution of the electromechanical facilities in the new stations of Bentaberri, Concha and Easo (formerly Amara) and the existing station of Lugaritz. Furthermore, it will also involve the work on the pumping wells in calle Pío Baroja and avenida de Zarautz.

The work for this project covers a great variety of services, the main ones being the extension of the 13.2 kV network, low-voltage connections in the new stations and pumping wells, installation of condenser batteries, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), low-voltage control cables, lighting, ventilation and fire protection for the new Central section of the Topo.

Elecnor has extensive experience in the railway sector, which means that it can perform ‘turnkey’ projects involving electrification, signalling, interlocking, communications and control systems for railways, undergrounds, trams and trolleybuses.

Elecnor has an important part to play in the plans to expand the Spanish high speed rail system (AVE) for which it has helped to develop a catenary system which will enable trains to travel at 350 km/h. This catenary technology has been installed on over 2,000 km of railway.

  "Topo" (the Mole) is the name given to the rail shuttle service between San Sebastian (Spain) and Hendaye (France), known for the many tunnels it passes through.
