Elecnor has signed a contract to electrify the largest railway project in Europe: Rail Baltica
Elecnor and Cobra Instalaciones have formed a consortium to electrify the largest railway project in Europe.
Vilnius, 15 September 2025 – Elecnor Servicios y Proyectos, S.A.U. has signed a contract that is fundamental for the design and construction of the electrification subsystem in the Rail Baltica railway project, the largest in Europe in terms of scope. Elecnor is participating in this project through the consortium COBELEC Rail Baltica, along with the Spanish company Cobra.
The contract, worth EUR 1,770 million, includes the electrification of 870 km of railway and over 2,400 km of tracks in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The first stage, with a budget of EUR 949 million, is expected to be completed in 2030.
Rail Baltica will pioneer the large-scale application of Static Frequency Converter (SFC) technology combined with 2x25 kV in a 50 Hz system, fed by ten traction substations. This technology guarantees reliability, energy efficiency and a strong commitment to the environment in the long term.
The award of this contract adhered to a rigorous tendering process beginning in May 2022, in which the COBELEC Rail Baltica consortium was chosen for its sound technical proposal, cost efficiency and sustainability credentials.
Marko Kivila, CEO and Chairman of the Board at RB Rail AS, highlighted the project’s strategic importance: “Electrification is not only about powering trains but also enabling sustainable mobility, ensuring interoperability with the European network and guaranteeing long-term energy efficiency for the whole region.”
With this award, Elecnor has reaffirmed its leadership in international railway projects and its commitment to innovation and sustainability.
