Iberdrola includes Elecnor in the biggest green hydrogen project in Europe

Elecnor will carry out the electrical assembly for the Puertollano plant and will provide electrical supplies

This is the largest green hydrogen project in Europe at present and it will contribute to decarbonising the industrial manufacturing process for fertilisers in Fertiberia’s plant in Puertollano, Ciudad Real. Elecnor will carry out the electrical assembly for the Puertollano plant and will supply electrical materials, such as switchboards and control cabinets, supports, conduits and light fittings.

In the tendering process, Iberdrola evaluated Elecnor’s ability to execute projects in the fields of engineering, manufacturing and the supply and installation of electrical equipment. The award of this contract is part of Iberdrola’s strategy for fostering the appointment of companies committed to promoting environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.

The green hydrogen plant will be operative later this year, following an investment of EUR 150 million. It will be made up of a 100 MW photovoltaic solar power plant, a system of lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of 20 MWh and one of the world’s largest systems for hydrogen production by electrolysis (20 MW). All of this using 100% renewable energy sources.

Development of innovative industry chains with high added value

Green hydrogen holds significant potential as an energy vector for the electrification of, principally, industrial processes and heavy transport. Additionally, it is seen as a key solution to the decarbonisation of the economy and the development of innovative industry chains with high added value, both in Spain and the European Union.
