Elecnor has made its mark in the Spanish solar thermal energy sector by developing three solar thermal plants, each with a capacity of 50 MW. These are the ASTE 1A and ASTE 1B projects in Alcázar de San Juan (Ciudad Real) and the Astexol 2 plant in Badajoz (Extremadura), which entailed a combined investment of more than EUR 900 million.
Each facility occupies approximately 160 hectares and features parabolic trough collector technology. Among other advantages, the three plants generate clean power equivalent to the consumption of 90,000 homes, thus preventing the emission of 144,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The facilities have also had a significant socioeconomic impact, creating 1.500 direct jobs during construction and 150 permanent jobs.
Entry into the Spanish solar thermal market has enabled Elecnor to add 150 MW of solar thermal capacity to its renewables portfolio, thereby demonstrating that it has the requisite technical and economic abilities to undertake the design, supply, construction, start-up, operation and maintenance of solar thermal plants based on parabolic trough collector technology. As a result, Elecnor is now considered one of the leading providers of EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) services in the industry.
Elecnor negotiated three project finance agreements worth EUR 700 million with several financial institutions to fund the development of these three plants.
Elecnor is committed to this technology and its growth will depend on the regulatory backdrop in Spain, the development of the market in other countries and technological trends.
Opportunities for development are also being explored in Chile, Brazil, India and the US.
Elecnor Group is one of the leading corporations in project development, construction and operation through two major mutually-enriching business areas: Services and Projects and Concessions.
